A Wedding to Remember

The BVI's natural beauty, pristine crystal-clear waters, magnificent white-sand beaches, lush hillsides and panoramic island views provide truly romantic settings for unforgettable weddings.

By Elise Donovan

Billionaire co-founder of Google Larry Page could have chosen anywhere in the world for his ideal wedding, but he selected fellow billionaire Richard Branson's enchanted and exclusive Necker Island in the British Virgin Islands. You don't have to be a billionaire, however, to enjoy your idyllic wedding in the stunning, naturally picturesque, unspoilt British Virgin Islands.

The British Virgin Islands tops the list of ideal wedding and honeymoon destination paradises. Its natural beauty, pristine crystal-clear waters, magnificent white-sand beaches, lush hillsides and panoramic island views provide truly romantic settings for unforgettable weddings. Create any fairytale fantasy on the mountaintop or on the beach, in a boat or underwater, in a private villa or at a church, or hide away amongst the unique boulder formations found nowhere else in the world.

Priceless Memories

A wedding in the BVI can be small and simple or over the top, but for ease of mind it's best to select from a pool of experienced wedding specialists who are always eager to ensure that your special day is flawless. As nature provides the setting, getting the right photographer to capture those unforgettable moments is priceless.

Amanda Baker has lived and worked in the BVI for the past 21 years. She enjoys documenting the natural environment around her, shooting weddings and children's portraits. After years of creating portraits for close friends and family, she launched her own business, Virgin Portraits, where she specialises in wedding photography.

Norman Allen is an experienced, professional photographer based in the Virgin Islands. He offers several photography packages to suit the needs of every couple, depending on how much coverage they're seeking. He combines romantic portraits with candid shots of the wedding party and guests to tell the story of your special day. Images are then posted online for easy viewing and ordering.

Wedding Requirements

A wedding specialist will assist you in getting all the necessary documents in order, but if you're doing it yourself, a marriage licence is easy to obtain, and the certificate is valid internationally. A couple is required to be in the BVI for three business days before they can be married. Upon arrival, apply for a licence at the Attorney General's Chambers, located on the second floor of the Central Administration Complex in Road Town, Tortola. The office is open Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Your application will take three business days to be processed. Both petitioners must be present at the Attorney General's Chambers when applying for the licence. After the licence has been granted, it remains valid for three months from the date it is signed.

The Attorney General's Chambers require the following for a licence: 1. Your passports as proof of identity and your date of arrival in the BVI; 2. Proof of marital status (certified original copies of the decree absolute for divorced spouses or the death certificate of deceased spouses); 3. A fee of $110 (in BVI postage stamps) for a special licence for those residing in the BVI for three days, or $50 (in BVI postage stamps) for those residing in the BVI for 15 days or more; 4. Two witnesses to sign the licence application. They do not have to be the same two who will be witnessing the marriage ceremony; 5. If the marriage is to be performed by a minister, provide a letter from the minister stating he or she is going to marry you; 6. If you're not using a minister, having applied for the licence, go to the Registrar's Office to schedule an appointment for the date, time and location you wish to be married. The Attorney General's Chambers sends all the required documents, including the licence, to the Registrar's Office after processing. The Registrar presents these documents to you on the day of your wedding.

Fees payable to the Registrar's Office are $35 if the wedding ceremony is to be performed in a church, and $100 if it's performed elsewhere. Consult your wedding specialist for more details.
