Arguably the biggest event in the British Virgin Islands, the annual celebration marks the 1834 Emancipation Act which abolished slavery in the British West Indies. All the islands celebrate with events taking place across the region. Visitors are in for a treat including live music, dancing, street performers, parties and parades all laced with a distinct Caribbean spice and flavour. The calypso competition is hotly contested with performers competing to win the coveted crown of the Calypso King. There are also competitions to find a festival queen and festival prince and princess. Food and drink are also important aspects of the celebrations and this is a great time to sample the delights of a Caribbean barbecue including seafood, spiced chicken and barbecue ribs.
